How it works

Four steps from your meeting point to a better price

You never drive, wait at the border, or take a day off work. We handle the trip, the paperwork, and the coordination with the hospital.

  1. Step 1

Tell us what your pet needs

Send a message or call. We'll quote the hospital's price for the visit and our transport fee up front, so you know the total before you commit.

  2. Step 2

    We meet you for pickup

On the day of the trip we meet you at a convenient point anywhere in the Los Angeles area, all the way down to San Diego, and settle your pet into a climate-controlled vehicle with a secure carrier.

  3. Step 3

Care at our partner hospital in Tijuana

Licensed veterinarians handle the exam, dental work, surgery, or diagnostics. We stay in touch with you and with the hospital throughout the visit.

  4. Step 4

Home again, with records and aftercare

We bring your pet back the same day, or after the hospital clears them following surgery, with their records, medications, and aftercare instructions.

Why is it so much less?

Veterinary hospitals in Tijuana run with far lower overhead than Los Angeles clinics, so the same procedures — dental cleanings, spays and neuters, mass removals, orthopedic surgery — commonly cost a fraction of what you’d pay here. You pay the hospital’s price plus our transport fee, and you see both before you decide.

What’s in your estimate

  • The hospital's price for the visit or procedure
  • Our transport fee, meeting point to meeting point
  • Any medications or follow-up the veterinarian recommends

Why families choose us

The care your pet needs, without the USA price tag

TJ Mex Vet exists because too many pet owners in the U.S. put off dental cleanings, surgeries, and diagnostics they can’t afford. We make quality veterinary care across the border simple: we do the driving, the paperwork, and the coordination, and you keep more of your money.

  • Meeting points, both ways

No border lines, no long drive, no day off work. You hand your pet off at a meeting point near you and collect them at the same spot, and you get updates along the way.

  • A partner hospital we trust

Your pet is seen by licensed veterinarians at a hospital we work with regularly, equipped for everything from routine exams to surgery.

  • Honest, up-front pricing

You get a written estimate before the trip that includes the hospital’s price and our transport fee, so there are no surprises when your pet comes home.

Booking & cost

How much will a vet appointment cost me?

It depends on what your pet needs. Dental cleanings, spays and neuters, mass removals, and orthopedic surgery are where owners see the biggest difference, because those are the most expensive visits in the United States. Tell us the procedure and we'll come back with an estimate that lists the hospital's price and our transport fee separately, so you can set it beside a local quote and decide for yourself.

How do I book an appointment?

Call, text, or send us a message with what your pet needs. We'll quote the visit and the transport, and once you're happy with the number we confirm a date, send you the intake paperwork, and tell you which meeting point to use and what time to be there.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Routine work — wellness exams, vaccines, a dental cleaning — can usually be booked a few days out. Surgery, imaging, and anything that needs a specialist fills up faster, so give us a week or more where you can. If you're on a deadline, ask anyway; trips move around and spots open up.

How do I pay for my pet's appointment?

You approve a written estimate before the trip, and the final invoice comes to you once the veterinarian is finished and we know exactly what was done. Nothing gets added without your say-so, and we'll confirm the payment methods we accept when we book you, so there's nothing to sort out on the day.

Meeting points & travel day

Where are you located?

We're based here in Southern California — the veterinarians are in Tijuana. Our job is the part in between: we collect your pet at a meeting point near you, drive them across, stay in contact while they're at the hospital, and bring them back to the same spot.

Where do we meet to drop off my pet?

We run meeting points across the Greater Los Angeles area and all the way down to San Diego, so almost everyone has one within a short drive. When we confirm your appointment we'll tell you which point is closest to you, the exact address, and the window to arrive in.

How will my pet be transported?

In a climate-controlled vehicle, in a clean crate sized for your pet, with fresh bedding. Crates are washed and sanitized between trips and bedding is never shared. Because it's a shared ride, we don't carry pets with a contagious illness — that keeps everyone else on board safe.

Can I ride with my pet to their appointment in Tijuana?

Most owners don't — they hand their pet off in the morning and get updates at pickup, at the hospital, and on the way back. If you'd rather travel with your pet, say so when you ask for your estimate and we'll tell you what's possible on that particular trip.

What are your hours and days of operation?

We answer calls and messages every day. Trips themselves run on scheduled days, with pickups in the morning so your pet is at the hospital when it opens. Return time depends on the procedure — a routine visit is usually the same day, while a surgery may keep your pet until the veterinarian clears them to travel. We give you an estimated return time before you leave the meeting point.

Border, paperwork & safety

What documents does my pet need to cross the border?

We handle the paperwork. To come back into the United States, dogs must have a microchip, look healthy on arrival, and be at least six months old, and we prepare the CDC Dog Import Form before the trip. Cats are simpler — there's no federal vaccination paperwork to re-enter, though we still bring their records. Rules change, so we confirm the current requirements before every trip and tell you exactly what to have ready.

Is it safe to take my pet to a veterinarian in Tijuana?

Yes, when the hospital is one you can trust. We work with licensed veterinarians at an established hospital we visit regularly, we transport pets in a climate-controlled vehicle with a secure crate, and we stay in contact with the hospital while your pet is there. If a procedure isn't right for your pet, the veterinarian will say so, and so will we.

What do you do about contagious illnesses like kennel cough?

We don't transport pets with a diagnosed contagious illness, and we ask you to tell us about a cough, a fever, or anything else that has developed since you booked — we'll move the trip rather than put other passengers at risk. Between trips every crate is washed and sanitized, bedding is replaced, and the vehicle is cleaned out. Crate covers are available if your pet travels better without a view.

What if my pet has an emergency?

Go to a local emergency hospital. A drive to Tijuana is never the right answer for a pet in crisis. We're for planned care: exams, dental work, surgery, and diagnostics you can schedule ahead. Our after-hours emergencies page lists 24-hour hospitals nearby.

Your pet's care

What veterinarians do you work with?

Licensed veterinarians at hospitals in Tijuana we know and visit regularly. We'll recommend the one best suited to what your pet needs, and where there's more than one sensible option we'll quote each so you can choose. You always get the final say on where your pet is seen.

What if I have questions about the appointment or my pet's lab results?

Ask us and we'll get you an answer. We pass along the veterinarian's notes and records with your pet, we'll put you in touch with the hospital directly if you'd rather hear it from them, and we translate if that makes the conversation easier.

Do you take any pets besides dogs and cats?

Dogs and cats are most of what we carry, but ask us about rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets — what matters is whether the hospital can treat them properly. Tell us what your pet needs and we'll give you a straight answer rather than a maybe.

Will my pet learn Spanish while they're down there?

Possibly. Our regulars get fussed over enough by the hospital staff that a few words stick — most of them pick up amorcito and precioso long before they ever learn sit.
